Set against the Troubles in Northern Ireland, Milkman follows an eighteen-year-old known as middle sister. An older married man, called the milkman, begins harassing her. Anna Burns builds the story around this young woman’s circumstances within a politically divided society.
It is Burns’s third novel, following Little Constructions. Milkman won the 2018 Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction for 2018, followed by the International Dublin Literary Award in 2020. The different dates refer to separate awards for the same novel.
